RAILROAD VILLAGE SQUARE

HGA PURCHASES CALHOUN STORE AND ACADEMY ANNEX located across from the Train Station on Cedar Street.   Once restored it will become (similar to the train station restoration) another major part of our grade school aged youngsters educational program, our retirement home tours and just as importantly will become another major step in our Kimmeytown Revitalization efforts.

This is a 120 year old corner store and academy annex directly across from the train station. We understand this is where the train workers and passengers picked up food and supplies.  The downstairs will be restored as a neighborhood store of that era while the 2nd floor will be redone as a grade school with children’s desks, blackboards, etc.

Once restored Calhoun’s Store and Academy Annex will play several major roles in our overall plans for revitalization.  One role is what it brings to our educational programs. The second role is the positive effect it will have on encouraging and even inspiring others to participate in our efforts.  Lastly it gives hope to two groups – the longtime residents who wish to see their past salvaged and the newcomers who are eagerly searching for a better life.

Railroad Village Square presently consists of the Georgetown Train Station, HGA’s Farmer’s Market and the soon to be restored Calhoun’s Old General Store and Academy Annex.   ALL ARE PROUD PARTS OF HGA’S KIMMEYTOWN REVISITED A COMBINED PRIVATE AND PUBLIC EFFORT TO REVITALIZE THE KIMMEYTOWN AREA.

Recently Announced

Historic Georgetown Association Chairman Carlton Moore recently announced that an attempt was being made to rescue Georgetown’s first volunteer fire station.

The old building which dates back prior to 1903 was located on South Race Street within sight of the courthouse and was abandoned after a new and much larger site was purchased on the “Circle” in 1926.  Later the old structure was relocated as part of the old Paul W. Short Southern States Feed store on Rt 113.  Recently the late Mr. Short’s daughter Sylvia and son-in-law Richard Calhoun have sold that portion of the farm.  The old feed store and warehouse were due to be razed.  With the encouragement of the Georgetown Fire Company, the Georgetown Historical Society and the new owners of the “Short” property HGA is moving forward to first see that it’s saved and then restored.  Once restored it will become a part of HGA’s well established fund and education program for “children of all ages.”
